ABOUT: Yallourn was a company town in the Latrobe Valley district of East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, about 145km/90miles from Melbourne. It was built between the 1920s and 1950, to house employees of Victoria's State Electricity Commission, who operated the Yallourn Power Station. The town had outstanding facilities and at its peak the population reached 5,000.

Houses within the town were owned by the SEC and constructed to a limited number of designs, differing in external detailing and surface finishes. A brick and tile manufacturing plant was built near the town and produced the characteristic terracotta roofing tile which was used to clad most homes.

In the late 1960s the SEC decided it would close the town and expand the open-cut brown coal mine; by the early 1980s this process was complete. Many of the town's houses were relocated, to nearby areas and also further afield, while the rest of the town was demolished.
