ABOUT: This illustration is based on a photo taken by the fabulous Westographer, aka Warren Kirk, a photographer based in Melbourne’s inner west. Warren takes photos of a world that is quickly disappearing, and is the author of multiple books, including Westography (2016), Suburbia (2018) and Northside (due out late September 2020). He also shares his beautiful shots on Flickr.

I was walking my dog in my neighbourhood in 2016 when I ran into Warren, who was photographing the house and its owner, long-term resident Olive. Although it is on the corner of two busy roads the house always looked immaculate, with a well tended garden, and I would often see Olive out the front, tending to her geraniums. She has since moved on and the house now looks run down (and let’s not talk about the state of the garden!) so I recently decided I wanted to capture it in its former state of glory. And thanks to Warren for letting me reference his photo!
